The Pursuit of Writing: 5 Practical Tips

I love writing—it is my favorite form of creative expression and I’m passionate about encouraging others with my words and stories. I wanted to share a few tips that have helped me on my writing journey in case they may help you too!

1. Block out time. Carve out a few hours somewhere in your schedule and treat it like a job. Try to resist the urge to use that time for other things! If you’re not inspired to write or don’t have any ideas in mind, utilize that dedicated time to grow. Maybe that looks like reading or listening to something inspiring, or maybe even an online writing development course! Whatever it is, make that time a priority.

2. Done is better than perfect, and perfect doesn’t exist anyway. For years I never finished anything because I felt like it was never good enough. Pursue excellence but let go of perfection. Even major publications and books have typos and errors.

3. If you don’t take your writing seriously no one else will either. Let go of other people’s opinions and judgements. We all have stories to be told, and they matter! If God is calling you to write, don’t worry about what other people may think.

4. There is nothing new under the sun. So don’t get discouraged when there’s a million other books/blogs/articles on the topic you are writing on. Everything may have been done before, but never by you. You, your voice, your perspective, your stories—that’s what makes your writing unique.

5. Let go of comparison! Comparison is the thief of creativity and it will be a major roadblock on your journey. Don’t compare, and especially don’t compare your beginning to someone else’s middle. It’s ok to grow slow. 🌱

So there you have it. Those are my top five tips! If you found this helpful, please share it with others on social media or by pinning it to Pinterest to help others find it too!

From my heart to yours,

Monika
