Finding Rest

This season of life is so hectic. Trying to find balance amidst caring for our family, working, and ministry. This month, in particular, has been so busy – our days & nights completely filled up. But amidst the busyness we must find time for rest. My soul needs it. And we need time with one another, to connect and just be. So one night last week we had our friend stay with the girls while we rode our bikes to the beach. We found two palm trees and set up our little travel hammock and watched the sun set together. It was the stuff my dreams are made of. It was so peaceful & relaxing and just what we needed. My idea of a perfect date.

I love this verse in Matthew “...Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me- watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.” [Matthew 11:28-30 MSG]

The words that stand out to me are freely lightly. What a beautiful way to live. I find that I sometimes get overwhelmed by the sheer number of things I am trying to get done each day. But then I will hear The Spirit whisper to me “give to me the first fruits of your time, and you will have plenty.” So I’ve been striving lately to honor that and ease into my day with reading & praying. It’s funny we often view our time with a scarcity mindset (just as with our finances), but I’ve found that if we operate instead out of a place of abundance, there is more than enough. And then I am able to check off my to-do list with a happy, calm spirit instead of an anxious one. This is so freeing for me as I am someone who used to stress out easily, but now, in faith, I can truly live freely & lightly.

Hoping you someone’s somewhere find beautiful, restorative moments of rest throughout your week.

With love,

Monika

California Roadtrip: Part 3

Untitled Untitled

The final leg of our road trip had us driving through Carmel, Big Sur, and San Luis Obispo.

Carmel was such a lovely quaint town. We only had time to stop there briefly for some coffee & window shopping, but I’m glad we got to see it. Would be a great spot to return to for a romantic weekend getaway.

The scenery in Big Sur is some of the most beautiful I’ve ever seen. Pictures cannot capture how stunning it is. The winding roads may have made me slightly nauseous, but it was oh-so worth it.

After that we finally made it to San Luis Obispo, where we stayed a night with some good friends of the Kelsos. We enjoying a delicious, hearty italian meal in town and ended the night watching Gone With The Wind (though we didn’t quite finish it as we all ended up crashing early).

Ryan and I were so blessed to get to go on this little adventure. We’re so in love with this gorgeous state and enjoy getting to see all that it has to offer. ♥

Come Sail Away

Untitled Untitled

A few weeks ago Ryan and I went sailing out on the harbor to celebrate our friend Monty’s birthday. It was really cloudy, which at first may have seemed like a bummer, but it was actually really beautiful. I loved the way the sun was pouring through the clouds.

Monty & his wife Christa are very dear to us. When we first moved to California they opened up their home to us and allowed us to live with them for a few weeks until we found our own place. They are now like family to us, and we’re very grateful to have them. ♥

Date at the park

The other night Ryan and I headed to the park near our house for some reading & relaxing. There’s this beautiful tree that is perfect for reading under. The weather was amazing and we read & talked until the sun went down. I think I could do this every single night and not get tired of it. Feeling really blessed and grateful that I get to live in this beautiful state.

Santa Barbara & Santa Ynez Valley

Several weeks ago Ryan and I had the luxury of going to Santa Barbara/Santa Ynez Valley with some friends to wine taste & explore. It is so stunning there that I couldn’t help but take a ton of pictures. The rolling hills & mountains are majestic enough to take your breath away. We had the opportunity to tour Saarloos & Sons on the first day of harvest. The owners explained the winemaking process and even let us try some of the grapes! AHmazing. Here are some photos from the trip. ♥
